Capturing the magic of a summer wedding in a Provencal bastide

A wedding in early August, set in the hills surrounding Grasse, offers a unique blend of natural beauty and timeless charm. This summer, I had the privilege to flower a wedding at a stunning Provencal bastide just up the road from my studio. A traditional stone farm house that perfectly captures the essence of the region. The wonderful couple travelled from the US to this stunning setting to create an unforgettable celebration.

The charm of a Provencal bastide for weddings

The bastide is nestled in beautiful gardens overlooking rolling hills dotted with olive trees - a perfect setting creating a serene backdrop that felt both private and expansive.

The early August timing meant the weather was reliably warm and sunny, perfect for outdoor ceremonies and receptions. The couple chose to hold their ceremony in the garden, where white and green floral arrangements complemented the natural greenery.

Designing with white, green, and purple

The ceremony’s floral design focused on fresh white blooms paired with lime green foliage. This choice created a clean, classic look that felt fresh and timeless. White roses, lilies, and lisianthus with pops of lime green were used for the arch and aisle markers, framing the couple beautifully against the backdrop of the olive trees.

For the reception, the couple wanted to introduce a splash of colour. Purple flowers, including alliums, clematis and scented freesia, were added to the center pieces. These pops of purple brought a subtle vibrancy that contrasted with the white and green, adding depth and interest without overwhelming the natural setting.

Bringing the vision to life with flowers

Flowering a wedding in a Provencal bastide requires attention to detail and respect for the venue’s character. The floral arrangements must enhance the setting, not compete with it. I aim to create florals that feel natural and quietly elegant rather than overworked, focusing on natural shapes and textures fitting for the surroundings.

Creating lasting memories

This wedding was a beautiful example of how a venue, season, and colour palette can come together to create a magical experience. The Provencal bastide offered a timeless setting, while the white, green, and purple flowers brought the couple’s vision to life with elegance and charm.

For anyone planning a summer wedding in Provence, consider the natural beauty of the region and choose floral designs that complement rather than compete with the landscape. The right flowers can enhance the atmosphere and create lasting memories for the couple and their guests.
